Article from Aeon on epistemic convergence in the study of world philosophies. I had this bookmarked when it first came out, and after revisiting it to finally give it a read about a week later, the cover title changed to The taming of Black thought. I see you, Aeon. Anyway, I think the author made the same points I heard over and over again in my undergrad philosophy courses: continental philosophy bad, and implicitly, analytical philosophy good. I still remember that one professor I had who was lecturing on it. "See, the word 'continental' implies the European continent, so how can it possibly be endemic of philosophy as a whole?" I'm paraphrasing there, but that was basically her point. Also, I felt that the author's "antidote" was quite banal. Read more non-Western philosophy and authors. Read more philosophy by women. I remember reading Huey Newton and Simone de Beauvoir in college—really trying to understand their perspective—just to get called a racist by some person of color anyway because I said something that was a bit "insensitive." I'd be nuanced if there was any room for it, but there's not. Also, the author made a point at the end about how Western people studying non-Western philosophy need to actually learn the language of the culture they're studying. My defense: weeaboos. That is all.
