I've always told my European friends that the EU should just call itself the United States of Europe already (in jest, obviously), but it's true that Europe's reliance on the US as an uncontested superpower is important for intercontinental relations. However, Trump's disdain for his allies is one that might make it hard for European countries to retain sovereignty in the future, and while I don't see a major Western European conflict on the horizon any time soon, I think it's important for the American hegemony to lean to our European allies in ways that directly support their sovereignty. It's also important to recognize that much of Trump's strong-arming is mostly seen-through at this point, and that the true leverage of the United States is understood and acknowledged. If we can learn anything from the PR-Wizard-in-Chief, it's that true control comes from indirect perception rather than anything direct and in-your-face. We've all become so "immune" to propaganda that we forget the constant waves of it we must endure every day.
